Using a Palm-Powered Smartphone
Stay Connected when the Phone is Closed. By Robert Lett.
Originally, there were only two phones that closed, they were the Kyocera 6035,
7135 and the Treo 300 series.
Problem: While online, if you close the Smartphone it would cut your connection.
This is a problem because sometimes, while downloading large web pages or large
programs, it's nice to be able to close the phone and put in it's holster. This
gives you time to do something else while you wait. The Kyocera 7135 is the only
one that suffers from this at the present time. The Treo 300 and the Kyocera
6035 don't have this issue. I'm sure there will be more flips coming in the
future, and I hope the manufacturers understand this issue when comes to the
newer designs.
Since I mainly use the Kyocera 7135, this was a real problem. There are three
ways to do it:
1. Carry a headset plug with you. (Cut the plug off of an old headset, and plug
it in when you plan to close the Smartphone). I go through about two to three
headsets each month. I'm really rough on them! This is somewhat a pain in the
backside, but it works.
2. You can also configure your fax modem to receive on the next call. This needs
to be done prior to logging on with your browser software. I've found that this
sometimes doesn't work, it's kind-of, hit & miss. But for the most part,
this works just fine. The problem I had was I could never remember to do this
before logging on. I would never know if I'm going to be downloading large files
or not. This is why I decided to just keep the plug in my case - just in case.
3. This is another hit & miss. If you set your Smartphone to 1xRTT, (One
Times Radio Transmission Technology), it seems closing of the Smartphone doesn't
have any effect on the connection. The connection operates off the carrier that
your Smartphone is connected to the tower with. I have found that sometimes this
doesn't work. The 1xRTT mode doesn't use the dialup portion of the phone. I'm
trying to speak as Layman as I can. When you are in 1xRTT, no phone number is
dialed to logon. So once the mode is set, it should stay there until unset. But
that's not always the case. You can close the Smartphone while online and it
will stay online for about five minutes before timing out. Then your browser
will ask you to login again.
