VFSFTP: FTP software for Palm OS:
*********************************
VFSFTP
Jon Trinder of www.ninelocks.com explains how their Palm FTP client VFSFTP came
to be written and how it is being used.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a mechanism for transferring files between
networked computers, if you have a website you have probably used FTP to upload
your files to your web site.
VFSFTP is an FTP application for Palm OS. VFSFTP enables files to be transferred
between a PalmOS PDA and an FTP server. Memos may be converted to text files for
uploads and text files downloaded from the server may be saved as memos.
Applications may also be downloaded and automatically installed on your PDA.
We had included simple FTP functionality in a number of our applications for PDA
cameras such as EyeMail for users of the EyeModule camera (www.eyemodule.com)
but in late 2002 I was persuaded to write a standalone FTP client.
The combination of factors that convinced me to write a stand-alone FTP client
were my own requirements and some external influences. I needed a means of
transferring data to and from Palms for a research project
(http://www.ninelocks.com/projweb)
as did a researcher at another university (http://lttf.ieee.org/learn_tech/issues/april2003/#1
). We needed something easy for students to use and so I wrote the underlying
FTP transfer mechanism to move the files we needed. Then the guys at PalmTop Pro
magazine convinced me to write a graphical interface for it and turn it into a
more feature reach FTP application. I am very grateful to Boris Luhovoy, Peter
Rand and Ulrich Krinzner of PalmTop Pro magazine who did much of the beta
testing and kept pushing me to improve things. All of the lively discussions
regarding which features were to be included were conducted by email.
VFSFTP was released in early 2003 and is being used in many different ways.
One of its most popular uses is to provide mobile means of maintaining websites.
A popular text editor to use for this purpose is SiEd (www.benroe.com). The
VFSFTP/SiEd combination can also be used as an aid to blogging
( http://www.palmsource.com/interests/weblogging/ )
There are many items of equipment such as cameras and scientific equipment that
store their data on memory cards that are compatible with Palm PDA's and VFSFTP
has made it easier to transfer data from such machines to remote locations. As
an example a surveying company is using VFSFTP to enable field operatives to
transfer data collected by scientific equipment back to head office for
analysis.
To make life easier for other developers VFSFTP can also be invoked from other
applications and we have people moving all sorts of data round.
"With VFSFTP, Palm users can now readily access thousands of documents and
files stored on FTP servers throughout the world, update web-sites with nothing
more than a Palm and a cell phone, and easily transfer important data from the
Palm to an FTP server for safe-keeping. VFSFTP therefore represents another
important step in the Palm's evolution away from a simple desktop companion to a
more powerful standalone computing solution. "Peter Rand Contributing
Editor,www.palmtop-pro.com

I've used this software for everything from site maintenance to the uploading of
this newsletter to the server. Another great use; While I'm traveling I take way
too many pictures. I usually file up my SD card that I carry in the camera. No
problem, I just put the SD card into my Smartphone, kick in the FTP program, and
shoot all the pictures to my web site. Once I've viewed a few of the pictures,
(confirming they were uploaded). I delete everything on the card and I'm back
taking pictures again. And I can always go back online to check out what I took
before.

Hang Gliding and Smartphones Part 2:
************************************
Most of the hang glider pilots use Amateur radio's to communicate with one
another. I'm just waiting on the day where my Smartphone will incorporate at
least the 2 meter and 7cm Amateur bands. And a 1KHz to 1GHz scanner would also
be nice! I'm still waiting. ;-)
The flight logs will also hold any notes you would like to make about another
pilot. With mine, I keep radio information and a buddy list on each location and
pilot I fly with. Some use HAM radio and others use Hang Gliding specific radios
which are in the 151MHz band. This way I know which radio to carry with me so I
can be on the same frequency.
Some of the more advanced flight decks with incorporated GPS will give the
entire flight history of the last 10 or more flights. This data is easily sent
to your computer for future use. With programs such as DocsToGo or MiniCalc/Chart
you can view all your past flights from a particular site graphically. The
software outputs a comma delimited file that can be imported into a spreedsheet
program. As long as the spreadsheet program has charting capabilities, you can
view the graphs created from previous flights. Which is nice to get a graph
chart on your average flight times, site altitude, flight track, and distance.
Now when you are traveling, you just pull up the next location, and your flight
trends are right there in the palm of your hand along with all the people you
met at that location. And all their contact information you might need.
These GPS flight deck units will usually have the following display capable:
Wind speed
Wind direction
Time of day
Flight time
Speed over ground
Differential speed between (TAS) True Air Speed and (GS) groundspeed
Altitude over destination
Distance to destination
Bearing
Track
Direction to best climb in vicinity
Ambient temperature
Altimeter 2 (relative)
Altimeter 3 (cumulated altitude)
Barometric pressure (HPa/in Hg)
Glide ratio (through air, over ground, to waypoint)
You can check them out at: http://www.flytec.com
I go to a few new Hang Gliding sites from time to time. Usually I just go online
and search for contacts to call for site permissions, all while sitting next the
fire at the camp site the night before showing up. Then, when I was getting
close to the new site, just give them a call and pickup all the information I
need. By the time I arrived at the site, everyone is ready for me. I would know
what frequencies they used and which radio to carry. What their procedures were
and where to sign in. And of course, sign a waiver if need be. (People always
worry about you crashing or something)!? And when I'm going to be late showing
up for a particular site, I usually shoot them an email the night before just to
let them know I'll be behind schedule. I like doing my email by campfire light!
In a sport like this, if you are late being where you said you would be, you
really need to communicate with them. (Something about this sport makes people
paranoid when you don't call when plans change. I have no idea why! I've been
chewed-out by someone I didn't even know, for not checking in with them).

Record labels are rushing to get a piece of the fast-growing ringtone market.
Warner Bros. Records recently began running commercials advertising
voice-greeting ringtones, or talktones. According to insiders in both the music
and wireless industries, this is the first time a major record label has paid to
advertise mobile content. Mobile users worldwide last year spent $3.1 billion on
downloadable ringtones. In the US, consumers spent $150 million in 2003 on
ringtones.

Dog ate my pda smartphone, got insurance!!!
I've got a 10 month old black Lab. She is a great dog!!! Her taste buds aren't
in the right place though! She ate my smartphone about a month back. Luckly she
didn't eat the SD card, which carried all my files and backups. If I hadn't had
the insurance, it would have really hurt! Instead of costing me $500-600, it
just cost $50. So I didn't have to shoot her. ;) Just kidding! I love her. I
never had a dog that licked and sniffed so much! I'm just afraid she's going to
drown the kid by licking him to death! Until next time.
